Two Skies beyond the Pivot Door (or Pivot door + Mirror + Window)
Graphite on paper + Photographs and Digital Renders printed on Acetate. 2019.
(841 x 594 mm)
An early exploration drawing of a massive pivot door leading to a series of darkened corridors. After seeing and grasping Le Corbusier’s pivoting door in his Sanskar Kendra Museum, this architectural element was explored and re-imagined in this drawing. Here, the act of pivoting the door was considered to be an architectural tool to slow one’s pace. As one heaves the heavy mass open with their body, a mirror placed right next to the opening, reflects a small window on the other side, and gives a glimpse of the sky before opening the door fully. The drawing attempts to explore the choreography of this movement and the sequencing of spaces and views. Photographs taken on the trip to India were printed on acetate, experimenting with layers of transparencies, textures and light.
